The Gear Technician is tasked with equipment maintenance for the gear used in our Grow-out operations. This role is vital in maintaining efficient market oyster production at Mook Sea Farm. Employees should be comfortable working as a part of a team in all weather conditions. The Gear Technician’s job responsibilities may overlap with the Oyster Farmer role. This includes but is not limited to, harvesting, cleaning, sorting, packing oysters, seed handling, biofouling control, as well as raising and sinking gear.

Schedule and Compensation

This is a full time, year-round job with hourly pay and benefits. Paydays are bi-weekly on Thursdays. The schedule is Monday - Friday every week. The shifts are scheduled for 6am-2pm daily. Daily shifts are approximately 8 hours; this position requires a flexible work schedule that may vary in the number of hours worked in a day, or in which the stop times may vary. Holiday and weekend work is occasionally required, and employees can "bank" holidays for future Paid Time Off.

Pay Range

This is an hourly position; compensation is determined based on experience. There are opportunities for pay increases after training and demonstration of competency and the ability to work as a team member.

Essential Functions

Gear Technician duties include cage repair, system-line installation, system-line repair, headline tension adjustment, and boat maintenance. They will:

  • Repair and maintain quality of cages at our river leases
  • Tension headlines at our river leases
  • Fabricate new cages used in the production of market oysters
  • Setup and tear down Mook Sea Farm lease sites
  • Assist with towing and/or operate chase boats for towers
  • Assist with winter prep work including but not limited to, moving the barge, and removing the wharf and ramp

Education, Skills, and Abilities

Relevant experience or education is required. On-the-job training will be provided. Employees are expected to have an interest in the work we’re doing, a positive attitude, and a great attention to detail. The Gear Technician should have no aversion to manual labor and work that is dirty in nature. They must:

  • Familiarity with air tools
  • Experience operating boats
  • Experience with knots
  • Communicate clearly, directly, and consistently (Both verbally & in writing)
  • Manage time and complete tasks effectively
  • Participate in collaborative problem solving
  • Work systematically, think critically, and problem solve
  • Work to continuously improve efficiencies of job responsibilities
  • Reliably follow strict protocols
  • Take direction from supervisors and work well with teams

  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to and from work
  • Maintain a flexible availability for work outside of 8 hours or 5 days a week
  • Work in a variety of challenging conditions

Work Environment

Employees should be able to tolerate exposure to typical noises and environmental conditions associated with work on the Damariscotta River and in our packing plant. The work involves a lot of equipment maintenance, and the work can be dirty.

Physical Expectations

This position requires an average of eight hours per day of standing and moving on boats, and requires physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete work at the farm. The position requires an ability to lift, push, and/or pull up to 75 pounds, and requires manual dexterity to operate a variety of equipment.

Travel

Travel expectations are uncommon, but travel can be a part of the job. When an employee uses their personal vehicle to travel, they will be reimbursed at the federally recommended reimbursement rate for mileage. Employees are expected to submit mileage forms to receive reimbursement. Employees are paid for time spent working, even when the work begins or ends at a location other than Mook Sea Farm. For travel that exceeds one business day, Mook Sea Farm will enter an agreement with the employee to compensate for time, mileage, and expenses.
