This position is Monday – Friday from 8:00am-5:00pm.

Job Description
Pemaquid Oyster Company (POC) is looking for an energetic, responsible intern interested in learning all aspects of shellfish farming. The successful applicant is a team player who exhibits initiative and attention to detail, and at times is able to work with minimal supervision. The intern must be comfortable working on the water, although training will be provided.

The intern will assist with almost all on-the-water aspects of farming oysters. Handling juvenile oyster seed in the upwellers, processing young oysters in the intermediate nursery phase and size grading oysters will be part of the job. The intern will work on the harvest vessel 1-2 times per week as well as process oysters as they are readied for sales and distribution.

Skills & Physical Requirements
The intern must be a self-starter and possess an attention to detail. The ideal candidate would be proficient in swimming, small vessel handling, SCUBA diving, and be mechanically minded. Basic knot tying and boat handling skills are a plus.

The intern must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, possess a valid Driver’s License, and be able to get on and off a boat without assistance.

Pemaquid Oyster Company raises oysters from 2mm seed in upweller systems, floating nurseries, and on bottom grow out beds to market size. Oyster seed are reared in our proprietary upweller systems prior to the nursery stage. Oyster husbandry includes grading and other routine maintenance.
