Maine Shellfish Developers, LLC (MSD) is creating a unique process for growing shellfish (bivalves) from spawn to market at a commercial scale in a completely land-based closed-loop recirculation facility. This is a one-of-a-kind process. The initial species for culture is the American Oyster, Crassostrea virginica. MSD is currently looking for talented enthusiastic individuals to fill select technical roles within the company.

Operations Technician-Part Time-Weekend

Position Summary: The Part-Time Operations Technician is responsible for assisting with all aspects of executing the proper day-to-day activities of a closed-looped shellfish recirculation operation. This position requires weekend coverage with overlap on Friday and Monday. This position has the potential to extend into a full-time position for the right candidate.

Responsibilities for the position include:

  • Assisting with all scientific and culturing activities of the operation
  • Collect scientific and production data
  • Help to ensure that all culturing parameters are maintained
  • Understand the functions of the general building systems (Heating/Cooling; Electrical; Plumbing; etc.)
  • Understand the basic function of the specific Recirculation Aquaculture System(RAS) components
  • Work closely with the Biology Lead and the COO to execute the designed research and production plan from a scientific and production standpoint
  • Assist in responding to any system alarms and/or parameter excursions during the work schedule
  • Understand the big picture goals and day to day functional impacts on those big picture goals
  • Offer thoughtful considered opinions and perspectives
  • Maintain a high level of on-site safety standards, required or otherwise
  • Reports to Biology Lead
  • Weekends required
  • It is anticipated that this position will require between 10 and 20 hours/week
  • Duties may be altered, added, or removed as logistical and/or practical needs dictate

Basic Qualifications Requested:

  • Formal education in a science and/or engineering discipline
  • Real world experience and qualifications with aquaculture production scenarios
  • Familiarity with recirculation systems
  • Familiarity with commercial aquaculture production techniques
  • Familiarity with remote sensing systems
  • Experience with data collection
  • Have an existing “farming” sensibility
  • Ability to think critically
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively
  • Accountable for completing tasks in a timely manner and to a high standard
  • Very organized
  • Extremely attentive to detail
  • Ability to multitask
  • Knowledgeable and aware of procedural safety requirements
  • Easy to work with and respectful of others at all times

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will have experience in the field of aquaculture and will have firsthand knowledge of research and commercial production skill sets
  • Knowledge and experience working with marine recirculating systems
  • Farming experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Minimal exposure to biohazardous chemicals
  • Occasional lifting of heavy objects
  • General ability to maintain an aquaculture production facility
